Review - Connett 'love & curses'

take as i find, that's me, love or hate, black or white. Connett is good honest british rock music, not in your mockney Blur style, it has a swagger but not in an arrogant Oasis way. Connett deserve a place at the high table of english modernist bands based on this their latest offering. Compared to 'waging war on the obvious' this is a more complete and rounded sound probably because of the places it was recorded, which can only influence a sound and bring out the best. It has edge and riffs! Everything fits! the look, the songs and the feel! Connett are stepping forwards with a new found confidence that only comes when you know you've got it right. This album is getting ready on a friday night, putting your best clothes on, getting your look right...............

Bang! Bang!

hit it hard i say, straight in there, grabbed your attention and it ain't going to let it go! superb album opener, one that you're not going to skip. Full band backing vocals and Darron's very distinct voice. Darron isn't a weller, a gallagher or a marriott, he's a Connett!

Rather Get Down

It get's better, this is definitely a mod sound! Great guitar riff punctuating the entire song, by now your neighbours will be banging on the walls, because this song should have a warning 'play loud!'

Mademoiselle

given where this was recorded, i can imagine the casual listener skipping straight to this track BUT given what's come before and the strength of the two openers, and the fact that i'd heard this before it sounds weaker than before. I know that sounds odd, but really this is such a good album of memorable tunes! this is just one of many. On it's own a Connett classic, on this album part of classic collection of Connett tunes.

God Given Ghost Town

right connett you can stop now! every song a riff running through this reviewers head. You need to listen to Connett's lyrics as they are sound bytes in themselves, social comment with a melody!

Be Right There

A nice funky feel to this, almost a speeded up Doors sound to it, a bit of funky soul about it. Very atmospheric, maybe the soundtrack to a film yet to be made or a day yet to be had?

He Said

this is my favourite track on the album, i'm not sure who or what it reminds me of, but maybe that's a good thing. it's a haunting song and Darron's voice has never sounded better, the production is sublime.

By The Sea

or maybe this is my favourite? another great sounding song, and perfectly sequenced in the running order, isn't that important? I think so, tracklisting can make or break an album for me, thankfully whoever did this one got it right.

Salt and Wine

up a gear, but not too much, easing you back. As i'm reviewing i'm listening with new ears. I implore you to give this album a spin, it's not going to disappoint.

Take Me Away

another very strong track, would sound great at a large venue, maybe a show closer? echoes of weller, oasis or the faces but definitely connett! This is the swagger i was talking about, the honesty. My only criticism, i wanted it to be longer much longer, the guitar solo at the end need's another minute or so to ingrain itself into your consciousness.

Real Life Adventures in Wonderland

Connett could have easily called this their greatest hits and you wouldn't have known any different, every song as strong as the last. A driving hammond beat, and another great riff.

It's War

great opening, spat out lyrics, an anti war song? This album is ending as strongly as it started, which is good because if you have any sense you'll put it on repeat.

New Horizon

the longest song, the title a comment maybe on where connett are now, a new horizon. They've raised their bar to a new level.

I sincerely hope this album will get the audience it deserves, it cries out to be listened. Play it to your friends, e-mail the music press, get them to listen. Connett are very passionate about their music and this is what made me listen, as i've stated previously, this blog is self indulgent and i stand by what's on it, with that in mind I will not endorse anything i wouldn't personally listen to, this is a great album and worthy of your endorsement, Connett will not let you down!
